Reducing Debt Stress

Joining the Clarity debt resolution program opens a world of possibilities to help you recover from debt and regain a sense of sanity and control. But that doesn't mean that the emotional effects of debt just magically disappear.

Throughout our program, you may still feel anxious, stressed, or even depressed about your debt situation. That's perfectly normal -- and acknowledging those emotions is the first and most important step in dealing with them.

Combining this acknowledgment with the following techniques can help you better manage your debt stress and the negative physical and emotional effects that come with it.

Talk about it openly and honestly

One of the most effective ways to combat stress is to talk about what's causing it. Debt can be a taboo topic, but opening up about your situation can help you feel less alone and more in control. You may be surprised how many of your friends and family have also experienced financial hardship.

Whether it's a friend, family member, or one of the supportive and understanding Clarity client services representatives, talking about your debt can help you recognize triggers, redefine your relationship with money, and develop a plan to reduce stress.

Take a minute and process

Sometimes the overwhelming anxiety that hits us when a bill arrives, or the phone rings is too much to process in the moment. In these cases, taking a step back can be helpful, even for a minute. Sure, you’ll miss the call, or the bill will still be there when you get back, but chances are that taking a quick break will allow you to approach the situation more calmly.

Stepping away and taking deep breaths through your nostrils and out of your mouth is a great way to physically relax your body and mind, making it easier to deal with stressful situations. After a minute or two of breathing exercises, you may find that you have a better handle on the situation and feel comfortable enough to take action.

Incorporate wellness time

Making time to distance yourself from your work and financial obligations is important.
Whether it's taking a yoga class, going for a walk-in nature, or meditating on the subway ride home, making time for activities that make you feel good will help reduce stress in the long run. These moments will help restore balance in your life and give you the energy and positive attitude you need to successfully tackle your debt.

Break it down into manageable steps

When we're feeling stressed, anxious, or even scared about our debt situation, it can be helpful to remember that we are not powerless. In fact, taking small but consistent steps is often the best way to tackle a big problem.

So, try breaking down your debt reduction goals into smaller, more manageable steps to ease your anxiety. For example, rather than thinking about paying off your entire credit card balance, focus on making your next payment on time. Or, if you're struggling to make ends meet each month, create a budget that will help you free up some extra cash.

Remember, progress -- no matter how small -- is still progress. And achieving it one step at a time is the best way to reduce stress, regain control, and eventually become debt-free.
